English biography

Martin Bråten is a classical pianist currently based in Karlstad, Sweden. He is a curious and knowledgeable musician with roots in southern Norway, where he first started playing the trumpet at 10 years old. A talented young musician, he performed as a soloist with the Barratt Due Unge Talenter orchestra. He later discovered his true passion for the piano and its repertoire, and from then on dedicated himself to playing the piano full-time, aged 16. The following year, Martin competed in the prestigious Ung Klassisk Talent competition in Arendal where he reached the finals, having had lessons for only one year. His stubborn pursuit of mastering the piano has made him a knowledgeable and technically-aware pedagogue for his students, who benefit from a thoughtful teacher with the unique ability to explain in words the intricacies of piano technique.

Martin has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Piano Performance from the University of Agder (UiA) with professor Sveinung Bjelland and a diploma on the master’s level from the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in Oslo where he studied with professors Marianna Shirinyan and Kathryn Stott. He also attended the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki as an exchange student from 2013-2014, where he gained valuable insight into music interpretation from his teacher Tarja Penttinen, as well as studies in fortepiano with professor Tuija Hakkila. Martin has a professional pedagogy diploma in Educational Theory and Practice (PPU) from the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH).

During his studies, Martin performed frequently in masterclasses for renowned pianists such as Kevin Kenner, Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, Jan Jiracek von Arnim, Kálmán Dráfi and others. He performed at the Oslo Opera Festival in 2016 as an orchestral pianist in the premiere of the opera Karlstad 1905 in the University Aula Hall. He has also performed solo and chamber music in venues such as Oslo Opera House, Café de Concert and Kilden Concert Hall.

Martin returns regularly to his hometown, Vegårshei and performs in recitals for the local community. Whilst living in Oslo, he taught students of all ages at the Oslo International Piano Studio (OIPS), and was frequently engaged as repetiteur for the eurythmy class at the Nordstrand Waldorf School (Steinerskolen). Currently, Martin is employed at Kulturskolan Landa in Kristinehamn, where he very much enjoys sharing his enthusiasm and ambition in music with his students.

Although piano makes up a prominent part of his life, Martin makes sure to carve out time for his hobbies, namely preparing delicious food for himself and others, going for runs, as well as both solving and creating difficult puzzles and sudokus under the tongue-in-cheek online pseudonym, “Piatato” (piano + potato).

Martin Bråten er en klassisk pianist bosatt i Karlstad, Sverige. Han er en nysgjerrig og kunnskapsrik musiker med røtter fra Sørlandet, hvor han først startet å spille trompet som tiåring. Som ungt talent fikk han fremføre Lars-Erik Larssons Concertino for Trompet som solist med Barratt Dues strykeorkester. Han oppdaget senere sin store lidenskap for pianoet og dets repertoar, og fra sekstenårsalderen dediserte han seg til å spille piano på heltid. Det følgende året deltok Martin i den prestisjefulle Ung klassisk talent-konkurransen i Arendal, hvor han kom til finalen. Han hadde da hatt pianotimer i kun ett år. Hans stae streben etter å beherske pianoet har gjort ham til en kunnskapsrik og teknisk innsiktsfull pedagog for sine elever, som får nyte av en velreflektert lærer med gode evner til å sette ord på pianoteknikkens intrikate komponenter.

Martin har en bachelor- og mastergrad i Utøvende klassisk musikk fra Universitetet i Agder (UiA) med professor Sveinung Bjelland, og ett års fordypningsstudium på masternivå fra Norges musikkhøgskole (NMH) i Oslo, hvor han studerte med professor Marianna Shirinyan og Kathryn Stott. Han var også utvekslingsstudent ved Sibelius-akademiet i Helsinki i 2013-14, hvor han fikk verdifull innsikt i musikkinterpretasjon fra sin lærer Tarja Penttinen, i tillegg til studier i fortepiano med professor Tuija Hakkila. Martin avsluttet sine studier med Praktisk pedagogisk utdanning (PPU) fra Norges musikkhøgskole (NMH).

I løpet av sine studier spilte Martin ofte i mesterklasser for velkjente pianister som Kevin Kenner, Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, Jan Jiracek von Arnim, Kálmán Dráfi med flere. Han opptrådte på Oslo operafestival i 2016 som orkesterpianist på premieren av operaen Karlstad 1905 i Universitetets aula. Han har også opptrådt som solist og kammermusiker på steder som Operaen, Café de Concert og Kilden konserthus.

Martin kommer regelmessig hjem til sin barndomsbygd, Vegårshei, for å opptre i konserter for det lokale samfunnet. Mens han bodde i Oslo, underviste han elever i alle aldre på Oslo International Piano Studio (OIPS), og jobbet ofte som repetitør i Eurytmi-timene ved Nordstrand Steinerskole. For tiden er Martin ansatt ved Kulturskolan Landa i Kristinehamn, hvor han trives bra med å dele sin entusiasme og sine musikalske ambisjoner med elevene sine.

Selv om pianospillingen tar opp en stor del av livet hans, så finner Martin også tid for seg selv og sine hobbyer, nemlig å lage smakfull mat for seg selv og andre, løpe og gå på ski, og ikke minst å løse og lage kompliserte sudokuer og annen hjernetrim. Disse publiserer han under det humoristiske online-pseudonymet “Piatato”, en blanding av de engelske ordene for piano og potet.
